Tiny Prints Mother's Day Campaign ~ What I Learned From My Grandmother

My grandmother was always there when I needed her and even more so when my mom passed away.  So this post is about her.  I will try not to cry while I type......

Unfortunately my mom passed away when I was 11 years old.  During the time growing up with her days were full of uncertainty and filled with medications and lots of anger.  Anger that she felt because she had suffered from every type  of cancer imaginable since her younger teenage years.  She loved me dearly, but could not find the way to express it.

And after her passing, at eleven years of age I still needed much guidance, my grandmother, being the strong, caring woman she was, molded me into who I am today.  I always say that if it were not for her I do not know where I would be today.  I don't think my life would have turned out as well as it has if not for her.

She taught me that family comes first no matter how much grief they may give you.  Love will always conquer our anger.

She showed me that no matter how poor we may be, that if we just take a look around we have all we need as long as we have each other.

Another lesson I learned from not only my grandmother but my grandfather as well was that being married was a blessing in itself.  Married for well over 60 years my grandmother showed my grandfather every day how much she cared and treasured their relationship.

Thankfully, I learned how to cook like my grandmother (although it took much burnt chicken, lumpy biscuits,  and mushy fried potatoes).  But my husband says that is what set the hook when we were dating.

My grandmother lived everyday in order to take care of the ones she loved.  She put them first before herself.  She never went on vacation, or went on an extravagant shopping trip.  Why?  Because one of her kids or grands kids may need the money for something more important.  I would have loved to have been able to take her on a cruise or take her to Jerusalem to tour The Holy Land like she had always dreamed of doing.  But she was content just to be there when someone came calling.

My grandmother passed away several years back and I miss her dearly.  But I know she is still guiding me with my children and my life.  And when something arises that I am not sure I can handle, I  always try to think "what would Freida do?".

Happy Mother's Day Mom-Maw!  You were the best "Mother" anyone could ask for!
