This story touched my heart for the fact that I really do not know how I could handle one of my children being injured. The pain that these parents felt was beyond anything I could ever imagine. But they stayed strong in their faith and believed that Alex would come out of this traumatic situation fully recovered.
In 2004, Kevin Malarkey and his six-year old son Alex were on their way home from Church. Kevin picked up his cell phone to call his wife who was waiting at home with their other children, one of whom was their newborn just brought home from the hospital the day before. As Kevin crossed the intersection another vehicle plowed into the side of their vehicle. The accident left his son Alex with severed vertebrae at the base of his skull. Medically Alex should have not survived the crash and the doctors were very skeptical about any recovery. He remained in a coma for months hooked up to breathing machines. To the medical staff’s amazement he started showing signs of his body healing. Alex woke from his coma to tell amazing stories of where he was and what he did after the accident.
Alex has a strong faith and love of God. He is a brilliant young man who is wiser then most adults. He loves to share his beliefs and he wants to one day be a missionary. Alex is still a quadriplegic but he and his parents know that he will fully recovery if not here on earth then in heaven. He was the first child to receive the “Christopher Reeve Surgery” that allowed him to breathe without a ventilator.
No matter what your faith or beliefs are, this story is bound to move you. For anyone to witness such a tragic accident to happen to their child, grandchild, niece or nephew, we could only hope for the courage and faith that his parents and family had throughout this whole ordeal.
