Falling Down Gorgeous
(Excerpt from Women in High Def, Boldly Living Your Purposes with Vibrant Clarity)

Time takes its toll on all of us. Parts of me that were once up here are now down there. My face, once smooth and fresh was becoming a bit weathered and wrinkled. Other areas that used to be firm are now wiggly. As I turned fifty I began to notice that I was becoming invisible, based on my appearance. That’s a big fat horse pill to swallow for my ego. But that’s okay. The good news is that when people start to see less of me, they see more of Jesus. He’s much more appealing and has no hidden agenda.
I hate to admit it, but I still enjoy being noticed on occasion. My husband and I went on a date to a very fancy mountaintop restaurant overlooking the city. I dressed for the occasion in my fitted black slacks, silky blouse and high heels.

I followed the maitre de to our table, my husband right behind me. I was feeling pretty good about myself and strutted a bit as we crossed a large open expanse of the room. As my stilettos went from carpet to wood floor something strange happened…I began to skate, stumble and flail about, for what felt like ten excruciating minutes, before finally landing flat on my keister. For endless moments all sound ceased except the quiet music in the background. Diners, servers and kitchen staff gaped at me, frozen in mid-action.

Graciously, I was helped up, escorted to and seated at our table, where they elevated and iced my swollen ankle. Then—to my horror—the paramedics arrived, causing an even bigger stir. Servers and managers came by frequently to check on me. Finally, our fellow diners made their way to our table as they departed to share their own “fall down” tales.

Earlier that evening, I had hoped for a little extra attention. But this wasn’t what I had in mind. Now I was just grateful I hadn’t chosen the skirt I had considered that was still hanging on my closet door. My experience that night was a great reminder that the only beauty that matters is what the Lord puts in our hearts. Everything else “falls” short in the end.

My Thoughts
I have never been the type that likes to have attention placed on me.  When I was younger I would sneak into a room hoping to be left unnoticed.  If someone would glance my way I would immediately glance at the floor and try to blend in to my surrounding.  Why?  I guess I was so self conscious of my looks that I was embarrassed to be seen in public.  You see for most of my life growing up I was told how ugly I was and after a while I began to believe it.  I could not fully understand why I would always have good looking boyfriends if I was so ugly. I remember after I first married my husband I had a family member visit me.  She saw his picture and stated she could not believe he was my husband.  He was just too good looking.  Though the comment was very hurtful, it opened my eyes to the people I should have in my life.  Thankfully after much maturing and coming into my own, I finally realized that it does not matter how someone else views my looks, the most important part is how I view myself.  It took a while but I am finally comfortable with myself and my looks and I will never let anyone drag me down again.

On the flip-side, I have had friends that were drop dead gorgeous and used their looks to move their way through life. They would always get free meals, drinks and yes some even racked up on clothing and cars.  As they grew older and their looks started to fade they received less attention and to a couple this was devastating.  They had to learn to start looking deeper within themselves to understand what actually made them beautiful.  What we have inside our hearts and how we present ourselves truly reflects our true beauty within.

In Gods eyes everyone is beautiful!

About the Book: (Check out the Website)
Women are as unique as snowflakes or butterflies, but after surveying hundreds of them, writer and radio host Diane Markins learned that the top needs they feel are the same. She also began hearing a recurring theme: I want more! I want to be better! I want to be bold!

Women in High Def aims to propel women out of a low-def, foggy life of going through the motions in a blur. The profound stories, intercessory prayer prompts and coaching elements work together to catapult women into living fearlessly for God…being bolder moms, having purposeful passions, pursuing marriage excellence, loving themselves with gusto, laughing with abandon, transforming mistakes into blasts of blessings and bravely seeking the Lord in all His majestic glory. The bonus Bible study at the back of the book points them to scripture to gain Biblical insight and direction for each need and role they play. It can be used alone or in a group.

The Sounds of Night App Blog Tour and $75 Best Buy Card #Giveaway

The Sounds of Night
Company name: Christian Apps 4 Kids
Founder: Jessica Kirkland
Type of App: Book app
Target Audience: Children ages 2-8 years
Availability: iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and all Android phones and tablets.

The Sounds of Night is a book app that helps put a child's mind at ease when the lights go out at bedtime. This book addresses one of the primary feelings young children face; fear. The Sounds of Night reinforces the principle that God is the Creator of every creature. Since God makes all the animals that scurry and screech at night, children can lie down and sleep in peace.

FEATURES: The Sounds of Night has over 75 touch points/interactions. It has rich illustrations and 4 Bible verses on fear that kids can learn with their parents and share with their friends.

DEVELOPMENT: Jessica Kirkland is a member of Moms with Apps. She recently launched Christian Apps 4 Kids, which seeks to draw kids closer to Christ one app at a time. Her inaugural app is a result of the fear that was such a part of her life:
In every season of life, the Enemy would whisper the lie that I would “never make it” to the next. I believed it. Time and time again, I thought his words held power. As a young child, I never thought I would live to see my school years. Once I entered school, I never thought I would live to see the next day, next grade, or milestone in life. I listened to a very real enemy, even though I didn’t want to. Even though I came from a strong, Christian family, I felt powerless to stop the lies. Fear gripped me, stole from me, and taunted every careful step I took.
Jessica believes the only way to be free from fear, as an adult or child, is to replace fearful thoughts with God's Word. Her desire for each book project is that they not only build character, but help set kids free.

The book app was developed in partnership with ROAR.

My Thoughts
I can remember when I was little, laying in bed with the covers up to my eyes, holding my breath at every sound.  Every night was spent in fear and anticipation for the morning to come.  No one explained away the sounds of night that I was hearing so my mind conjured up monsters, ghosts, and other types of creatures.  When we had our kids, I did not want them to be afraid of going to bed and the darkness.  We came up with other ways to try and help them sleep, and for a while they worked.  One of the things I used was "Monster Spray."  (Room Deodorizer) Sprayed right before the lights went out gave them some satisfaction that they could sleep peacefully, and it took care of their stinky room at the same time.

If only I had this app when my kids were little.  It is great in explaining away all the night sounds while allowing full interaction with the child.  Although I would love to see it in a book format, I think with today's up and coming techy kids, the app works well.

KCWC Blog Tour The Promise of Deer Run & Grand Prize Giveaway

About The Promise of Deer Run:

America’s war for freedom from England has been over for seven years, but the wounds of that conflict still haunt the minds and hearts of the residents of Deer Run. Young American veteran Nathaniel Stearns has withdrawn to a life of isolation as he awaits his father who never returned from the war.

A near-tragedy in the woods brings Nathaniel face-to-face with nineteen-year-old Sarah Thomsen, someone he had long admired but he assumed had eyes for another. This chance encounter opens a crack into the door of his heart as mutual affection quickly blooms.

But slander and lies soon mar the budding romance, rendering both Sarah and Nathaniel wounded and untrusting as their faith in both their God and each other is shattered. Set in 1790, this book continues the story of the Thomsen and Lowe families as they struggle to survive in the aftermath of the war that birthed the United States.

About the Author:
Although currently living in the Midwest, Elaine Marie Cooper spent much of her childhood in Massachusetts. She has long been interested in family history as well as Early American history. She is a registered nurse and an award-winning freelance writer.

Elaine is a regular contributor to a blog on the Midwest called The Barn Door (thebarndoor.net) She continues with magazine freelance writing and is currently working on the sequel to "The Road to Deer Run."

She lives with her husband of 35 years (Steve) and three dogs and one cat. Both her sons are married and Elaine is "Grammie" to triplets. Her only daughter Bethany died in 2003 from a brain tumor. "The Road to Deer Run" is lovingly dedicated to her memory.

My Thoughts:
This is an excellent book and though fictional, one I would recommend for anyone who loves reading books pertaining to the history of war and the affects it has on the people who fought in them and continue to do so.  The main character Daniel's loss of his father touched me deeply along with his struggles of keeping faith not only for himself but for those around him.  This is definitely on my Father-in-Law's Christmas Reading List.
