Ebooks Vs. Print ~ Plus Ebook Free & Bargain Sites

One of my favorite things to do is to read.  From the time I can remember, picking up a book was a great way to escape the chaos of life and just relax.  The best feeling in the world is holding a book in my hands and turning the pages to read what happens next. I love walking through the doors of a book store and smelling the print of the books in the air.

I have a large collection of hardback books of many authors, which in itself poses a storage problem, but you would not be able to pry them from my dying hands.

With that said, I am trying to embrace the ebook world of reading.....I did say trying.  I can pick up a printed book and read it from front to cover in one day.  When I open an ebook, it takes me days and sometimes weeks to read. Distractions of texts, emails, and other things that make my brain go in to over-drive keep me from getting lost in an ebook.  But since it seems this is the way books are going, I will work harder to cut out the distractions.

I travel frequently and always have a book to read with me.  This can become cumbersome on an airplane that provides the smallest amount of room.  I also find that I would finish a book while away and end up at a book store buying another one. Adding to my space problem.

I downloaded the Kindle App for my IPad to read my ebooks and started looking for books to quench my reading thirst.  When I started my search I was very frustrated by the availability or lack of choices.  Most free books were for samples, classics, or from authors that I had never heard of before. The so-called bargain books were way too pricey.  After further research I came across several sites that offer ebooks at low costs and best of all, a large amount were free!  Most of them send you a daily email of updated books for download.

  • Bookbub - BookBub is a free service that helps millions of readers discover great deals on acclaimed ebooks while providing publishers and authors with a way to drive sales and find new fans. Members receive a personalized daily email alerting them to the best free and deeply discounted titles matching their interests as selected by our editorial team. BookBub works with all major ebook retailers and devices, and is the industry’s leading ebook price promotion service. BookBub was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

  • BookShout - BookShout! is a next generation retail and e-reading platform that allows authors, publishers, and brands to sell books AND stay connected to readers.
BookShout! has many of the same retail sales features as Amazon and we go the extra mile to allow content creators to gather data, create viral promotional and marketing campaigns, partner with brands, and build community. Instead of being a traditional “closed ecosystem” where authors and publishers can’t measure and stay connected, BookShout! is an “open ecosystem” created to serve both readers and content creators.
  • Freebooksy - Freebooksy posts a free ebook at least once a day. They cover multiple genres so that there is something for everyone. The ebooks are free on the day that it is post.
If you are a more avid reader Amazon has started it's Kindle Unlimited Program.  Kindle Unlimited is the Netflix of books.  It lets you borrow as many books as you want at a single time from a collection of 600,000 Kindle titles and thousands of Audible audiobooks, with no due dates. Subscribers can find eligible titles by browsing the Kindle book store and looking for any book flashing the Kindle Unlimited logo. Simply click on the "Read for Free" link, and the book becomes available. The monthly subscription for this program is $9.99.  If you do not read more than one a book a month, this may not be for you. I generally read two or three books in a month, so I have decided to give it a shot.  I have used it for three months now and really like it.

Now that I am finally learning to embrace my ebooks along with my printed books, I have a different type of space problem.  Now I need a bigger IPad!

What is your preference?  Will you ever totally give up your printed books for an E-reader or will you mix it up with both?
